Key buildings to preserve

Many of the building within my site represent the long history of Portsmouth, so I wish to find a way to keep these buildings within my site. Some examples are presented here.

Extra notes

In my research on the areas of Portsmouth and particularly Commercial road these are the key areas I need to focus on:

Abandoned Buildings: Many of the buildings in commercial road have been abandoned in recent years, so I plan to counter this by preserving the facades of the buildings themselves to make the “banks of the river” and then having larger open spaces on the east side behind these facades. The area that used to be Debenhams will be converted into a new housing unit and the area of cascades itself isn’t affected as much from abandonment

Homelessness: As with much of the country in todays age, there are issues facing the availability of housing, but Portsmouth in particular faces these issues due to the limited space on the island itself. Therefore it is key I find a way to utilise space for both housing units and spaces needed for community use.

Space limits: due to the island itself having limited space, We as architects have to start developing more creative solutions to spacing issues, hence my concept becoming a more vertical approach with preservation of the spaces beneath a key feature as well.

Community: More so than the rest of Portsmouth, the area of commercial road is a multicultural area which needs to encourage community interaction. To achieve this I plan to make as much space as possible into public green space.
